One of the most stressful times in a person’s life is a move, a relocation. There are so many details to attend to, and getting the details correct is simply not enough. Both small and large tasks also have to be done in a correct order, and usually within time parameters (and frustrating constraints). If you question this, try to predict how much time it will take to deal with the government, say, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and estimate if you have enough time to get your account changed before the bank closes.

I have made a career of creating help for people who are moving. It began in 1982, with my transformation of a local publication into Newcomer Magazine. Seems like a century ago. Like many sunbelt cities, Richmond, Virginia was exploding with new residents. The need for useful information was so great – and I was young -  and excited to find that people wanted to buy advertising. And while selling ads is no picnic, I took to it well. Magazine ads became the main way I fed my family and put the kids through school.

Over the 26 years that came and went (whoosh, my goodness, where did they go?), the technological changes turned that little magazine caterpillar into todays new product – digital magazines. It is, really, a mind-boggling revolution. About the time I was feeling on top of my game, the product became ad-less and paper-less. I guess the best analogy is tennis becoming Wii Tennis. I mean, it looks like tennis, but…

So, here I am. Green, through-and-through.

A French proverb says, “The more things change, the more they stay the same.”  And the greatest changing is now expressed in this sameness: my desire to help people in this difficult period of moving one’s home.

So, in the next few blogs, I will introduce time-proven methods of easing stress, meeting new people, settling in…and saving money. Please introduce others to this PRE-MOVERS blog, and recommend other experts with whom this effort can join.
